Title Platform / Status Year Rating / Notes
CAIN TTRPG / Currently Running 2024 ☆☆☆☆ - A horror shonen tabletop RPG from the mind of webcomic artist and game designer Tom Bloom. If you want a game that emulates the feel of Chainsaw Man or Jujutsu Kaisen, look no further. CAIN avoids many of the pitfalls that other indie narrative games fall into by having a strong identity and mechanics that facilitates playing the genre it's emulating. There's a clear gameplay loop of exorcists investigating psychic monsters, suspense rising through 'tension' and 'pressure' mechanics, and an array of evocative abilities the players have at their disposal to do really cool stuff. I'm a big fan of horror and investigative games, so this was right up my alley. There are some minor editing and copy errors, but for a game written, designed, and drawn by one individual, CAIN is a tight, cohesive horror-anime roleplaying experience.
Touhou: Artificial Dream in Arcadia PC / Ongoing 2023 ☆☆☆☆ - This is a Touhou Project fangame that takes the Touhou characters, setting, and bullet hell gameplay and puts it into an old-school SMT game. Mixing SMT dungeon-crawling with cute yokai girls is a cheatcode to make this appealing to a lot of people, myself included. There are a few 'puzzles' required to progress in some places that are so esoteric I had to look up the solutions to them, but other than that this is a straightforward, fun JRPG.
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Gamecube / Completed 2004 ☆☆☆☆☆ - The very first FPS I ever played and beat. The exploration and backtracking gameplay loop of the Metroid series works really well with the parallel dimension mechanic of Dark Aether. Every area has two versions, except one dimension has a poisonous atmosphere that kills you if you stay outside of the safe areas. The atmosphere is exceptional, as is the case with all the Prime games. It's a pretty hard game, and the consensus is it's the most difficult game in the Prime trilogy. I was forged in the Dark Aether of Gamer Prime.
